Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
