European football's governing body has initiated a disciplinary case concerning Chelsea's the Portuguese international after he shoved a ball boy in the Champions League match by Paris St‑Germain.
The Portugal international, Neto, shoved the youngster in the dying moments of Wednesday's last-16 fixture at Parc des Princes – a match in which his team suffered a 5-2 – which caused him falling from his seat.
The incident triggered an altercation involving players from both teams.
The governing body confirmed proceedings have been instigated against the player for "conduct contrary to sporting spirit" as per the official rules.
"Disciplinary officials will decide on this case in due course," European football's governing body announced.
The Chelsea player expressed regret over his actions attributing it to getting swept up "in the intensity of the match" while he was attempting to regain possession of the match ball.
"This is out of character for me. Emotions were running high and I offer my apologies. I gave him my shirt. I'm really sorry about it - I owe him an apology," Neto explained to broadcasters.
"I don't speak French well, so teammate Vitinha stepped in and told him that it was a momentary lapse.
"Finally he saw the funny side and I gave him my shirt and said sorry about 35 times. He realized what had happened and was satisfied with how it was resolved."
Chelsea welcome Paris St-Germain in the upcoming second leg for the return fixture, after Newcastle's visit to Stamford Bridge this weekend in the Premier League.
