This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
