The United States Puts Forward a 15-Year Period of Security Guarantees, States President Zelenskyy.

In a recent development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the United States has outlined a proposed peace plan that includes protection pledges for the country spanning a period of a decade and a half.

The Framework's Specifics

The Ukrainian leader noted that in the course of critical discussions with US President President Trump, he had asked for long-term defense assurances for as long as half a century. However, the outlined plan calls for a reduced commitment of one and a half decades from the United States.

The exact form is uncertain what these assurances would take, but the Ukrainian leader has been advocating for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, modeled on Nato’s key doctrine that aggression towards any member is considered an attack on all.

Progress on Peace Talks

According to Zelenskyy, American defense commitments for Ukraine under the revised 20-point proposal have been completely settled, though the US President offered a more guarded assessment, estimating the agreement at more like 95%.

Each statesman stated that progress had been made during the meeting at the US president's residence. President Trump did note, however that there were a couple of challenging unresolved matters, particularly regarding territorial disputes.

Conditions for Russian Talks

In related comments, Zelenskyy also told the press that a meeting with Russia would be possible after the American and European allies endorsed a settlement proposal from Ukraine to conclude the conflict.

This remark comes in response to Donald Trump remarked to reporters that he was of the opinion a trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen once the timing is appropriate.

Historical Context

The two leaders have been without a summit since over five years ago. That previous engagement, brokered by the leaders of France and Germany, was intended to renew efforts to settle the persistent war.

In a later instance, in the spring of 2025, the Kremlin leader refused to attend talks in Turkey for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, dismissing a direct offer to discuss peace in Istanbul.

Unresolved Land Disputes

One major sticking point continues to be the disposition of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Trump said that a proposal to turn the territory, which Russia largely controls, into a zone free of military forces remains "unresolved".

The President went on to say that it will be apparent in a matter of weeks if the conflict can be concluded.

Both sides have stressed that the protracted diplomatic process would continue as they strive for a final resolution to the nearly four-year war.
