Everyone Are Invited to Join as the Additional Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: I also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have openly coveted the role.

It's clear a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"So everyone is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
